All Heidelberg Commercial Printer Saves Money, Resources with
Latest Installation
Kennesaw, Ga., October 27, 2005 - Boyd Brothers Inc., an
all-Heidelberg commercial printer located in Panama City, Fla.,
recently installed its second eight-color Speedmaster SM 102 with
perfector and CutStar roll sheeter. In addition, the shop added
Heidelberg's Prinect Printready system to increase efficiencies.
The addition of the new equipment has resulted in significant
savings in terms of money and shop resources.
The company decided to install the second Speedmaster press
after experiencing substantial reductions in production and paper
costs from its first eight-color Speedmaster SM 102 with CutStar
technology. Today, the shop's two eight-color Cutstar machines are
running at 400,000 impressions during a 24-hour period. Each press
nets approximately 100,000 impressions per 12-hour shift. The
newest eight-color press with CutStar replaces two existing 40-inch
Heidelberg presses, bringing increased efficiencies to the shop.
"Adding the first CutStar press to our shop enabled us to
take on new jobs and grow our business," said Jim Boyd, Jr.,
president, Boyd Brothers Inc. "Buying paper in rolls is much
cheaper than buying single sheets. The new technology from
Heidelberg is helping us drive down our costs so that we can sell
our printing at market price and remain profitable."
CutStar technology from Heidelberg is easy to use and brings
many benefits to the shop floor. CutStar is installed in front of
the feeder of the Speedmaster SM 102 or CD 102 and can process
paper rolls with stock weights between 30 and 300 gsm (30 pounds of
text to 112 pounds of cover). The short grain paper is unwound from
the reel, cut to the required format by CutStar and subsequently
shingled. The resulting stream is fed into the feeder. Since
shingling is performed directly in the CutStar, the stock feed is
constant and reliable, allowing the Speedmaster to produce at
higher speeds than when using sheeted stock and reducing costs.
"Heidelberg's sheetfed presses are designed to help companies
cut production costs while maintaining the highest print quality
and shortest setup times," said Roland Krapp, vice president,
sheetfed and Prinect product management, Heidelberg USA. "Depending
on stock type, customers can save 10, 20 or even up to 30 percent
on paper costs with CutStar's reel paper as opposed to sheeted
stock."
Along with the new Speedmaster SM 102, Boyd Brothers also
installed a two-color Printmaster PM 52, a five-color Speedmaster
SM 52 press with coater, a Stahlfolder TD 78 with palette feeder
and a Suprasetter 105 computer-to-plate device from Heidelberg. The
shop has installed a wealth of equipment in the last three years
after renovating its facility to expand the bindery.
"Our goal is to increase the efficiency of each employee
through cutting-edge technology," said Boyd. "Heidelberg's
state-of-the-art equipment has contributed to the success of our
company, and we're already seeing outstanding results from our
latest installation."
Boyd Brothers is a third-generation family-owned shop that
specializes in publication-type and general commercial work.
Founded in 1931, the shop's 53,000 square-foot facility houses a
full prepress, press and bindery workflow as well as an in-house
mailing service. With 105 employees, Boyd Brothers services
regional clients within a 250-mile radius of Panama City, Fla., and
earns approximately $13.5 million in revenue per year.
