Flying in from GraphExpo in the US the "Anicolor", an
anilox version of the Speedmaster SM 52, will make a three day
stopover for the Heidelberg open house in Brentford (Tuesday 7-
Thursday 9 November) before returning to Germany for further
demonstrations.
"No one competing in a tight and cost-competitive environment
can afford to ignore this technology because it changes the whole
cost per sheet position of litho," says Richard Bradley, marketing
manager small format. "Anicolor is the star of the show but
expect an excellent supporting role from the Suprasetter A52/74
series of Suprasetters which have just been launched. I expect a
high turnout of small format businesses and quickprinters at this
show."
Heidelberg has developed Anicolor believing it could change
the cost-effectiveness of litho, taking it to a breakpoint vis a
vis digital or DI down from about 500 to 100 or less. It also
virtually eliminates start up waste. Heidelberg main board director
Dr Juergen Rautert speculates that anilox inking models could
account for 30% of future SM 52 sales.
Anilox to date has mainly been used on waterless presses, a
niche market because of narrow quality control tolerances and high
consumables costs. Now it is being supplied with a dampening
solution which makes it:
• easy to operate
• fast to make ready with dramatically less waste
• cost-effective because standard inks and plates
can be used
• more flexible because a wider range of stock and
in-line finishing options are available with offset than with
digital technology.
"Direct Imaging in B3 was limited to four process colours in
one pass and the ROI was vulnerable to plate prices with only a
limited number of suppliers. Today printers need solutions which
are more flexible in terms of the number of colours, consumables
choice and the ability to expand and evolve," says Mr Bradley.
"Running offset with CtP means one plate unit can supply more
than one press and plates can be produced concurrently with the
press outputting print. With today's workflow solutions this means
higher output, predictable and controllable colour and management
information feedback in real time.
"Anyone considering a digital press or DI for short-run work
would do well to consider the options. Offset litho using anilox
technology is once again taking a giant step forward and outpacing
the 'new digital technologies' on many fronts"
Other highlights at the Brentford open house include: the new
ST450 saddle-stitcher not seen since IPEX supported by a
Speedmaster XL105 six-colour with coater, a CD 74 ten-colour
perfector and the full range of prepress all JDF-connected with
Prinect.
