"Heidelberg says the Speedmaster XL105 will give us 30% more
productivity than the five year old CD 102 we are replacing - if it
can do half that I will be impressed," says Michael Watson,
managing director of Steffprint.
The Keighley, West Yorkshire printer will take delivery of a
Speedmaster XL105-5L, a five-colour with coater, at the end of
October. It is an investment which Steffprint believes will give it
both productivity and quality benefits.
The company's £3m turnover is split three ways in
relatively equal amounts and each sector stands to gain from this
reinvestment.
Its mail order work tends to be high volume and here the leap
from 15,000sph to 18,000sph will be a big help. About 25% of the
companies current output is coated and currently produced at speeds
up to 12,000sph which will increase up to 50% to 18,000sph.
Likewise, the significant amount of trade work produced by
Steffprint will benefit, providing a high quality, faster service
and at prices which allow both parties to work profitably.
"We looked at alternatives but the XL105 was the best press
overall. Its flexible nature will help all sectors of our market,
with short runs benefiting just as much as long runs. The new
feeder and delivery, advanced makeready automation and high
production speeds together with wide flexibility of paper and board
weights will be beneficial to both clients and Steffprint," says Mr
Watson.
The company runs both B1 and B2 presses 24 hours, five days a
week with weekend overtime as required. The new press replaces a
five year old CD 102-5L and staff will have pre-installation
training in the Leeds Heidelberg showroom on an XL 105.
"This investment is good news for existing clients and will
attract new business as part of our planed growth towards a
£3.75m turnover this financial year," says Mr Watson, who led
a management buyout of the company in year 2000 and has been
proactively growing the business whilst at the same time focussing
on maintaining efficiency.
By the end of this year the company will also have completed
a two storey office extension, a reflection that the company has
been recruiting, and will revise its company logo and overall
branding.
The company is updating its prepress workflow to enable
maximum output efficiency on its Topsetter 102 CtP system. Its
finishing side, which also offers trade services, has up to date
cutting, folding and stitching facilities in place.
