The Digital Print Solution Center of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen
AG (Heidelberg) brings together the company's digital print
offerings.
The company entered this market sector in fiscal 1999/2000.
In April 1999, it took over the Office Imaging / Black/White
Digital Printing Division of Eastman Kodak Company. Heidelberg and
Eastman Kodak Company formed a joint venture known as Nexpress for
developing digital color presses. One of Heidelberg's strategic
goals is to become one of the leading companies for professional
digital print solutions in the next five years.
The Digital Print Solution Center has production sites in the
USA (Rochester, New York), Mexico (Tijuana), the U.K. (Kirkby) and
Germany (Mühlhausen). Sales in this sector reached 763
million Euro in the fiscal year just concluded.
Digital printing
Unlike conventional printing processes, digital printing
does not require extensive preparation time. Digital data can be
used to produce direct, high-quality printing. Digital printing is
ideal for short runs requiring the fastest possible turnaround.
This makes it an ideal addition to offset and offers the customer
new, highly promising areas of operation. It enables production of
personalized and customized print products which can be adapted to
meet the exact needs of each individual addressee. The process is
also ideal for on-demand printing. Moreover, the NexPress 2100 for
digital four-color printing offers special one-to-one marketing
opportunities.
Digital black/white printing - opening up new market segments
The Heidelberg Digimaster 9110 offers the best print
quality in its class, superior paper transport, an open system
architecture and an end-to-end workflow. It has therefore quickly
become a top of the line product in its market segment. With more
than 2,000 black/white digital presses already shipped, Heidelberg
has now achieved a market share of 17 percent in this sector. The
company's goal is to increase this share to 30 percent in the
next five years.
The Digimaster covers four different customer segments: The
graphic arts industry, in-plant printshops, quick-print copyshops
and - since the DataXceed output management software was introduced
- computer centers in the telecommunications, insurance and
financial services industries etc. To be able to penetrate each of
these segments effectively, Heidelberg has developed a
multi-channel sales strategy. Heidelberg supplies the digital print
solution through its own sales organization and also works with
various sales partners such as IBM, Canon and Danka, each of which
has their own specific knowledge of the market. Heidelberg
manufactures digital finishing components for its digital print
solutions in Mühlhausen near Stuttgart including, for example,
an inserter and the new Inline Hole Puncher 9110 for the Digimaster
9110.
Digital color printing
The new NexPress 2100 digital color press is winning over the
market for high-quality, personalized and customized print products
with up to 100 percent variable data. The standard of print quality
is almost as high as offset. Very short runs can also be processed
profitably. Among the competitive advantages of the press are lower
service costs, made possible by remote service and improved press
availability. Operating staff can, in the majority of cases, carry
out maintenance on the NexPress themselves using the ORC concept.
The press can produce 2,100 fully personalized pages per hour in
A3+ format (350 x 470 millimeters) on a variety of different
papers. Heidelberg is the sole selling agent for the NexPress.
