A New Variety in the Half Format
The Speedmaster SM 74 can be configured in many different ways.

"Thanks to the extended range of options, customers can
now tailor their SM 74 exactly to their needs. After all, the
equipment of a press has to fit every aspect of the business model,
just like a key fits into a lock", emphasizes Bernhard Seidl, the
responsible Heidelberg product manager. There are two standard
models that can be configured according to individual needs: one
with standard delivery and one with high-pile delivery.
Standard delivery or high-pile delivery
The press with standard delivery is available as two-,
four-, or as of late, even five-color model. "The SM 74 with
standard delivery is best suitable for the job range of print shops
that operate in a single shift", Seidl explains. Its standard
equipment includes the automatic washup devices, and the four- and
five-color models also come with the Prinect Press Center operating
and control station as a standard feature. The press with high-pile
delivery is available as two- to ten-color model. It is designed
primarily for industrial customers with high print volumes who
operate in two or three shifts. That is why, in its standard
version, it is equipped with automation technology that increases
its productivity, for instance with the semi-automatic
plate-clamping system AutoPlate. Its production run speed is 15,000
sheets per hour. All presses are controlled via the Prinect Press
Center. "Customers benefit from its user-friendliness and from
functions that reduce the makeready times, like Intellistart.
Compared to previous SM-74 models, the productivity is up to 20
percent higher", Seidl points out.
The standard-equipment configuration possibilities are
tuned to the typical job range in the 50 x 70 format. "There is no
such thing as 'one press suits all'", says Seidl. Therefore,
customers can choose not to take accessory items, for instance the
combined blanket and impression cylinder washup device, or the
electric pull lay monitor. "Or they can add components, like
AutoPlate or the Vario function for the dampening unit. Coating
unit configurations with the two-roller system, the chambered blade
system, or the combination coating unit are also possible."
"Thanks to the possibility of selecting accessories
according to their needs, our customers can develop along their
individual company goals and enter more lucrative business fields
without investing more money than necessary", Seidl explains. Our
latest product in the medium-size format is a fine example: the
Speedmaster SM 74-5 with standard delivery. According to Seidl,
this model is a top seller, because it makes print shops that do
not need the large capacity of a high-pile delivery press more
flexible. One customer, for example, has been able to increase its
number of incoming orders and customers considerably by switching
from an SM 74-4 to an SM 74-5. "Now, he can offer a wider range of
products at more competitive prices", Seidl remarks.
The following examples show how print shops benefit by selecting

More and more customers order leaflets and advertising
brochures with several pages or products with special colors. That
is why he wants to embark on the next larger format, 50 x 70.

The customer is more flexible, because the additional
printing unit enables him to process special colors or print
varnish inline. He also increases his productivity (even in
postpress), thanks to more ups per sheet. At the same time, he can
offer new products such as posters, or printed matters made of up
to 0.6 mm thick substrate.
Growth in the half format
A customer uses his Printmaster PM 74-4 mainly for jobs with
a run length ranging from 3,000 to 6,000 sheets. His employees work
overtime and on Saturdays, so he has already reached the limits of
his production capacity. Growth is no longer possible.
To cope with competitive pressure, he wants to
offer more than just four-color products and be able to accept
orders at short notice in the future.

Thanks to the higher production run speed of 15,000
sheets per hour, the customer can reduce his throughput times. The
fifth printing unit serves the same purpose, as it renders a second
pass for five-color jobs unnecessary. And by switching from
EasyPlate to AutoPlate, the customer reduces the time required for
changing plates by up to 30 percent.
