Security Printing and Embossing. Hidden images prove a product's authenticity and protect against forgeries.

Product piracy is becoming increasingly profitable, while the risks are normally low. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) estimates the damage in international trade at 200 to 300 billion Euro each year. According to the customs authorities the product forgeries account around 800 billion Euro.
Forgery-proof packaging and labels
Both the quality and volume of forgeries are increasing rapidly. Forgers concentrate on achieving a packaging that is as authentic as possible or an apparently real label rather than on realistic content, which means it is often virtually impossible to distinguish the original and the fake. The need for brand protection is also shown by the enormous demand for forgery-proof packaging and labels on the fast-moving consumer goods market. The volume for suitable solutions has now been put at over 30 billion Euro a year.

The technology
In conjunction with Saueressig GmbH & Co. KG, Vreden, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG now offers a cost-effective process that integrates security features, so called hidden images, into a color separation. This does not interrupt the production process.

The process
The hidden images are created at Saueressig using a patented process. They are processed in line with customer needs using special software, which programs the hidden images according to a patented encryption algorithm and inserts them into the customer's original files. Pixel and lens segments are changed in such a way that the inserted information can no longer be detected by the naked eye. The decoder makes hidden images visible and proves the product's authenticity.

Enhanced customer loyalty
Concealed icon technology is one of the cost-effective and secure encryption technologies on the market and offers printshops the opportunity to expand their print portfolio. The hidden information is created once by Saueressig in accordance with the user's specifications and can then be used for twelve months without any limitation on run lengths.

This makes life much more difficult for forgers of luxury and consumer goods, software or pharmaceuticals. Brand owners obtain greater protection, security, and reliability for consumers and thus enhanced customer loyalty, which also reduces lost sales. At the same time, the technology enables products to be clearly labeled and traced, which simplifies for instance potential liability issues.
