The correct reproduction of grey values is a key quality indicator
in printing.
However, visual checks and manual adjustments can result in
unwanted changes to all tonal values. Changes are based on
individual printing conditions and are therefore very hard to
manage. Usually, it's required to make several corrections to
achieve the desired result. These additional corrections involve an
increase in paper waste and result in longer make-ready times.
Heidelberg is pleased to announce a solution to this problem
with the release of its Prinect Color Toolbox v3.5 with Grey
Balance Optimiser. This calibration tool is the latest addition to
its Prinect Color Toolbox suite of integrated colour management
solutions for optimising colour and imaging for proofing, plating
and press output devices.
Grey Balance Optimiser is a simple, user-friendly way to
accomplish near neutral calibrations. The tool automatically
accounts for differences in substrates, inks, overprint trap
characteristics and printing processes, and the results help to
achieve standards such as ISO, GRACoL or SWOP. With a few clicks of
a mouse, users can prompt the Grey Balance Optimiser to compare
data and generate values for calibration. The software uses
industry standard colour management targets, does not require
special charts and eliminates the need to print dot gain scales to
perform calibrations.
Grey Balance Optimiser achieves both tone reproduction and
grey balance by calculating new CtP curves to match any desired
target. Near-neutral calibration with Grey Balance Optimiser
enables print shops to deliver their customers accurate, repeatable
colour matches from job to job - even when using different
materials and output devices.
"The tool is a big step in colour control and will help
printers to achieve ISO standards on different presses or output
devices," says Soeren Lange, Product Manager for Heidelberg
Australia & New Zealand. "Previous calibration methods had to
deal with dot gain issues associated with specific inks,
substrates, printing processes and pressroom conditions. Now the
Grey Balance Optimiser uses profiles or reference values to
calibrate directly to the neutral tones of the reference profile
and avoids extra print runs. This saves time and paper in
make-ready, but will also ensure more reliable colour control. This
is the tool printers need to streamline their manufacturing costs."
With its Quality Monitor, Calibration Tool and Profile Tools
modules, the Prinect Color Toolbox also enables simple, continuous
monitoring of the printing process.
