The inaugural winners of the Heidelberg Eco Printing Award 2008
were recently honored at a small ceremony at the Print Media
Academy in Heidelberg. A five-member panel of international judges
selected two winners from over 50 applicants from across the world
-and sustainable print shops from across Australia, New Zealand and
New Caledonia made up approximately 1/5th of the applicants!
Most Sustainable Print Shop
Hemlock Printers Ltd. in Burnarby, Canada, was presented
with the environmental award for the most sustainable print shop,
which comes with a prize fund of EUR 30,000. Their environmental
approach incorporates the entire printing process - from
administration, building management, transport logistics, through
to paper and material selection, ongoing training and disposal. The
company also supports the community with social, environmental and
ecological initiatives.

Most Innovative Solution
Yoshida Printing from Nigata, Japan, accepted the award for
most innovative stand-alone solution which came with a cheque for
EUR 20,000. The company's "fresh print" concept, which facilitates
production in smaller batches and speeds up print processing, has a
positive impact on the environment and is seen as an innovative
solution that can be applied to the entire print industry.

The two winners were chosen from a shortlist of ten
companies. Red-i in New Zealand and Black Rainbow in Australia were
amongst those shortlisted under the 'most innovative solution'
category.
Heidelberg plans to run the HEI Eco Printing Award every two
years.
