The installation of a new Speedmaster 52-2 colour perfector press
has literally transformed the production capabilities of Wollongong
printer Flagstaff Print and Mail. General Manager Paul Beckett
talks about the company's recent acquisition and future upgrade
plans.
Flagstaff Print and Mail is a division of the Flagstaff Group
a not-for-profit (NFP) organisation committed to providing
meaningful employment for people with a disability. Beckett
says that despite the NFP status the company still has to compete
in the commercial sector on the same playing field as any other
print shop.
"Government assistance towards the Group's
operations account for less than seven percent of our running costs
so we have to ensure we are highly efficient to be able to compete
in the marketplace."
"We had been operating a number of one and two colour
GTO presses, but the lack of automation was really impacting on our
ability to meet these objectives."
Beckett, whose company BCH Printing was bought by Flagstaff
in 2004 to provide print fulfillment for the Group, is a long time
advocate for Heidelberg equipment.
"I've been working with Heidelberg machines for
twenty years. Last year I traveled to drupa to look at presses
in the A3 space. We produce a large volume of small run
jobs. Our old GTO presses were creating a bottleneck that was
compromising our ability to deliver jobs on time."
"I looked at presses in larger formats, but the
Speedmaster 52 is the ideal machine for our needs. It is fast,
efficient and delivers a high quality result every
time. Combined with our Heidelberg CtP system it has
transformed the way we print."
Beckett says the print division is continually looking at
improving efficiencies. In line with its strategic plan
Flagstaff is currently in the process of installing Heidelberg's
SignaStation imposition software to further enhance the automation
of its CtP processes. And in the near future it plans to
replace two more GTO presses with Speedmaster technology.
"The new press with its perfecting technology enables us
to produce work twice as fast as before. Now we've seen what
the Speedmaster technology can do we are convinced this is the way
forward."
Beckett says the offset market may have softened slightly,
but Flagstaff Print and Mail is unfazed. "We have just
employed a sales manager to get out there and work the
market. In the past we have relied on organic growth but now
we are more focused about growing market share."
In conclusion Beckett says Heidelberg continues to be a
"terrific partner. Everyone we've dealt with has been great.
Nothing has been too much trouble including the extra training
sessions we needed to cover our split shifts. The Board, the
management and staff are all extremely happy with the
outcome."
