Pettaras Press in Sydney's Roseberry is one of the most awarded
printers in the country. In this month's NSW PICA Awards the
company took out no less than nine awards from thirty
categories. Managing Director Steve Pettaras says this
achievement is a direct result of the company's commitment to
producing quality print.
Over the past nineteen years Pettaras Press has expanded from
a one man operation to today employing over 75. Steve says
the business has used technology to grow. "We've always
upgraded whenever we've been able. It is critical to keep up
with technology and to employ it to streamline processes."
Keeping up with technology means knowing what new products
are on offer and Steve makes regular trips to visit the major
industry trade shows. At drupa this year he purchased the
latest saddle stitcher from Heidelberg, the Stitchmaster ST350 -
Heidelberg's best selling saddle stitcher across all industrialised
markets. The ST350 joins the company's existing Polar 137XT
with a full system two set up with stack lift, jogger and
transomat, and a Stahl TH82 all buckle folder.
"We had old equipment in the bindery which was slowing down
the production flow because we had to take certain measures to
ensure the quality of the product - like using false covers to
prevent marking. We don't have to do that now thanks to the new
equipment from Heidelberg."
"Across the board the time spent on make readies is greatly
reduced. Now that the bindery is fully automated the entire
workflow runs more smoothly and more efficiently."
Steve says the manner in which his Heidelberg account manager
Savas looked after him in the early stages gave him confidence to
move forward with the rest of the bindery refit. "Sav' was
fantastic and I was happy to continue working with Heidelberg on
our upgrade project."
"The training as well that the Heidelberg demonstrators gave
our bindery staff made it so much easier to transfer to the new
ST350. I was extremely impressed with the limited down time in
production."
In closing Steve says, "Business is great for us at the
moment and having the bindery up to speed makes all the difference
to taking on a greater volume of work. You have to move with
the times. I've seen some enormous changes to our industry
and you either embrace the new methods or get left behind."
