New Long Perfector Drives Sales For WA Printer

Warrick Finlay, Director of Optima Press, seen here with Mike Leek of Heidelberg, following the recent installation of Optima’s new SM74-8-P long perfector.
The installation a new Speedmaster 74 8 colour long perfector (SM74-8-P) has delivered greater productivity and driven sales for Perth's Optima Press.

Director Warrick Finlay says that since the press' installation in April this year it has been full steam ahead.

"The speed of the new press is remarkable.  We are pushing through jobs in half the time it took before.  And make readies are the fastest we've ever seen."

Located in Osborne Park Optima Press has been servicing the WA market for 19 years.  Employing 30 the company produces a wide variety of print for clients that include government departments, local councils, ad agencies and corporations.

Optima Press operates a number of Speedmaster presses - an SM74-5 with coating unit, an SM52-2 and the new eight colour which replaced an SM74-4 which Warrick says "had served us well over ten years.  We briefly looked at other options on the market, but nothing compared to the Speedmaster.  Plus we have an excellent relationship with the Heidelberg team in Perth and the service and support they provide is terrific."

Warrick says they optioned the SM74-8-P with Axis Control to ensure colour consistency. "Axis Control is fantastic.  It allows us to scan colour bars and manage colour.  We've had no quality issues whatsoever with colour consistency and the press operators think Axis Control is of great benefit."

Lindsay Barnes - Sheetfed Product Manager for HAN says the SM74 is still a very popular press dominating the half sheet long perfector market even more so than the A1 format. "Its proven single diameter transfer cylinder and sheet guide system prints a wide variety of commercial work at high production speeds with markless transfer. It's only recently that double diameter technology has become available in this format from Heidelberg (the CD/XL) and others but the SM74 configuration has been in Australia since 1999.  It is still going strong and we are still selling it".

Another factor in replacing the older press with this new model, says Warrick, is the issue of finding good staff.  "In the West it is difficult to find staff.  We needed a machine that would automate production and enable us to print more in the same timeframe without having to increase the headcount on the floor."

Since the installation of the press Optima's sales team has been going "flat out to feed the press.  It has taken them a little while to come to terms with how fast this press is, but the benefits of the long perfecting technology is enabling us to competitively produce larger runs particularly publication style work."

"The press is definitely driving sales. It has exceeded our expectations on all levels."
