Heidelberg to the Rescue

Newcastle is no stranger to natural disasters.  It has weathered the ravages of the 1989 earthquake and most recently in June this year massive floods, which devastated the New South Wales' Central Coast and Hunter Valley. Many businesses and homes were affected with a damage bill estimated at $200 million.

Cavalier Printing in the Newcastle suburb of Broadmeadow didn't escape the rising waters. Kent Parkes, one of the company's directors, spoke of the toll on his business. "The flood took out equipment including our two colour press and cutting gear. We also lost a lot of stock, and all finished product we were holding for our customers."

Kent has been with Cavalier for twenty years and seven years ago he bought into the business with his partners. Today the company employs nine and produces a broad range of commercial print.

Prior to the flood the company operated a Heidelberg GTO 2 colour press.  Kent says that out of the disaster came something positive - the company got to upgrade to the Speedmaster (SM) 52 installing a two colour machine which has made a significant difference to the Cavalier's capacity and turnaround times. "We are now capable of producing twice the amount of work in the same time frame."

When the disaster hit an SM52-2 colour was already on its way to Australia. It took only four weeks from the time of the order for the press to be up and running. The Polar 115 guillotine that replaced the damaged cutting equipment was installed within a week.

The speed at which Heidelberg was able to get the company back into production has assisted Cavalier Printing recovering from a business perspective, only three months after the floods.

The stand out feature of dealing with Heidelberg during the crisis was the service Kent received from the sales and service departments.  "Heidelberg did everything they possibly could to assist us.  I can't fault their service.  They went out of their way to help.  The installation went smoothly and gave us one less thing to worry about. The service was superb."
