Westcare Incorporated is a not-for-profit organisation that has
been working with disabled persons in Western Australia for more
than forty years.
The organisation's primary function is as an employment
provider for those with disabilities finding placements throughout
its various subsidiaries. It has more than 110 people in
employed across five business units.
Its print business, Westcare Print, is its most significant
income generator and employs 45 in the bindery. CEO Peter
Beaton says that even though the association is a not-for-profit,
Westcare is still commercially driven as the greater the turnover
the more disabled people it can employ.
"In order to compete we have to operate as a commercial
enterprise and meet the quality and service expectations of the
market like any other printer," explains Beaton who took over the
role of CEO three years ago. Since then he has embarked on an
upgrade programme that has seen pre-press revamped and a
Printmaster 52-2 colour installed in February this year
complimenting the company's older presses.
"You need to work with new technology in order to grow.
We looked at the various manufacturers and assessed the gamut of
presses on offer from really high spec'd presses to those with
little automation. We thoroughly investigated what was on offer and
decided the Printmaster delivered a level of automation in its
price range that put it in a category of its own - it has all the
automated functions we need to produce high quality print fast."
In the six months it has been up and running Beaton says the
new press "has greatly benefited our business. Everything is
significantly faster - make readys, wash up, and it consistently
runs at its maximum designed speed - 13,000 sheets an hour.
Its versatility and functionality make it a pleasure to operate and
the guys on the floor think it's a great machine. We are very
pleased with our decision."
