Staff Profile

Name: Melanie Dooley

Position: Marketing Coordinator - Product Management

How long have you been working with Heidelberg?
Four and a half years

Hobbies & What do you do in your spare time?
Reading, writing, gardening, cooking and winding down. I'm also addicted to the Food Channel on Foxtel.

The best place you've been to?
Do you have a few hours to spare? I loved China for the frenetic energy, culture, food and contrasts. North Queensland and Tassie rate highly as well.

The most incredible experience you've had?
Travelling through Africa in 1996 I was caught up in a civil war in the Central African Republic. Stuck in a war zone for 2 weeks; gun fire, bombings, tracer fire evey night. It was  'incredible' because life went on as normal around the front line, tanks and bunkers full of soldiers. We still managed our nightly beer at the café up the road and trips to the patisserie  for croissants each morning.

How would you describle your typical day at work?
Managing (sometimes juggling) a huge variety of tasks from placing magazine adverts, developing promotional mailers, helping to arrange events, commissioning articles, writing press  releases, desiging things. My job has a lot of deadlines so I keep lists everywhere.

The best thing about Heidelberg?
At Heidelberg you are respected as a person with ambitions and interests, and these are well supported by my manager and the company. As well, the workplace is relaxed and  flexible, which only inspires professionalism and dedication from the team. I work with a great group of people.

The most memorable experience with Heidelberg?
Working as part of the teams who put together Pacprint 2005 and Printex 2007. A year of planning came together and everything went really well. As well, travelling to IPEX last year was a real eye-opener and a great experience. Hard work though!

The most challenging thing you have experienced?
Work-wise - moving from being the travel coordinator to marketing coordinator. I had to learn a new career when I was in my mid-30s and it was a great challenge as well as a  satisfying achievement.
Personally -  When I moved to London ten years ago I arrived with 50 quid to my name, no job, nowhere to live, no friends. I was a bit scared, phoned my mum and cried, then I went  out and bought a pair of shoes. Got a job the next day and found a home and friends later that week. Everything works out well in the end.

What would you be doing if you didn't join Heidelberg?
I'd probably be either teaching English overseas somewhere or working in travel management, which is where I worked before joining Heidelberg.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
Where I am now - happy, healthy and doing what I want to be doing.
