Over the past 5 years Melbourne print shop ASF Printing has gone
from operating a GTO 2 colour press to running Speedmasters
including an SM74-10 colour perfector. Owner Alan Ferguson
says these new presses have literally transformed the way he does
business, keeping down overheads, increasing capacity and providing
room to grow.
"The leap from the GTO to the Speedmaster range was massive,"
says Ferguson who first installed an SM52-2 colour in 2002 before
adding the five colour in 2005. Since then he has also
upgraded the bindery and pre-press to streamline production.
"But the Speedmaster 74 ten colour with perfector puts us in a
different league - we can push work through three times faster with
the same number of skilled operators."
Installing the SM74-10-P in 2007 was about planning for the
future says Ferguson. "It's like when you first get married,
you only need a small car, but when the kids come along you have to
upgrade. I didn't want to keep changing equipment.
After doing my homework I decided the ten colour perfector would
set me up for the future and let me concentrate on growing the
business without having to continually upgrade."
ASF Printing hasn't always been a Heidelberg house.
Ferguson's decision to go with Heidelberg was made after
considerable market research into the company's equipment including
print testing in Germany and visiting other sites in Auckland and
Perth. Ferguson says one of the main reasons he decided to go
with Heidelberg is the fact that "no other supplier in Australia
can provide the back up and support that Heidelberg does.
They are the factory, they make the equipment and if there's a
problem they fix it. There is no middle man. You can't
overlook the value of that kind of support."
