Name: John McGuffie
Position: Team leader Instructors, Southern Region
How long have you been working with Heidelberg? 18 years
What exactly do you do? Explain a typical day…
As a press demonstrators we are involved in training press
operators when new machines are installed. It can be just a
few days or longer for more complex machines depending on the
installation. We also do demonstrations for the sales
team in our showrooms or at customers' sites and
troubleshoot all manner of press problems. Our overall task is
make sure our customers get the very best in quality and
productivity from their Heidelberg. Also since expanding our range
of consumbales we are now involved in recommending the right
Heidelberg product for the right job making Heidelberg unique in
being able to guarantee performance of our consumables on our
machines.
Its the variety and the constant learning process that makes
the job interesting, just about one of the best jobs in Heidelberg.
What do you enjoying doing in your spare time?
Seeing the grand kids, watching soccer - (a Liverpool
tragic), pottering around the garden, going out with old friends.
What career path did you follow to reach this job?
I worked on printing presses and in supervision for many
years.
How would you describe your team?
Fortunately my team is very easy to work with and are
very self motivated, there are 8 demonstrators in Australia and New
Zealand located in all the main centres but we cover for each other
and go where the work is.
Which five words would your Heidelberg colleague to describe
you?
Easy-going, knowledgeable, organized, helpful and trustworthy
The most memorable moment working with Heidelberg.
Doing the first PacPrint, I was amazed at how this massive
show 'appeared out of nowhere'. I realised then how good we are and
how important team work is and how many very capable people we
have, and how we sometimes take this for granted
The most challenging thing you have experienced.
PacPrint every four years is a real challenge as we have to
do our normal day to day work as well as preparing for the show. I
must say that if there is stress it is something we put on
ourselves in the quest to always do our best for our customers and
do the right thing for them. In giving high levels of service, we
set the bar pretty high for each and every job. But that's what
gets me up in the morning - the challenge.
The best thing about working at Heidelberg.
A lot of things could be 'the best', for instance, constantly
learning new things to keep my mind alive, having lots of good
people to back me up when things get difficult out in the field,
and the knowledge. I am working for a dynamic company that won't be
left behind with technology.
What would you be doing if you didn't join Heidelberg?
In a print company either as a supervisor or running a
press.
Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
I love what I do so I hope to still be doing it in the
foreseeable future.
