At IPEX 2010, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) will be
unveiling the Stitchmaster ST 450 saddlestitcher with newly
developed upright and horizontal feeders and the new Streamfeeder
for automatic loading.
As the only company to supply upright feeders for
saddlestitchers, Heidelberg has further improved the ergonomics of
these machines by adding a height-adjustable jogging table. The
working height of the table can be adjusted as required, thus
providing greater comfort regardless of the operator's height.
Developers at Heidelberg have also revised the functionality
and design of the feeders. New materials allow for even smoother
transportation of sheets in the feeder. This is especially useful
for paper that is difficult to process, such as recycled paper, in
order to eliminate electrostatic charges. It also enables sensitive
paper that is hot off the press to be finished quickly and easily
without compromising on quality.
On the new feeder, the vacuum is now controlled
electronically by means of a valve. Unlike the current mechanical
control, the moment at which sheets are sucked into the magazine is
now adapted to the machine speed. Sheet separation is performed
automatically by the Stitchmaster ST 450, making the process even
faster and more reliable. Users benefit from improved processing
quality across a broad product spectrum and also enjoy higher
productivity. The new feeders will be available from mid-2010.
Environmentally friendly - new feeders improve the energy
balance of the Stitchmaster ST 450
The new feeders achieve a considerable saving in the
amount of compressed air they require. For example, the compressed
air consumption of a typical machine configuration for the
Stitchmaster ST 450 with seven feeders and cross-feeder is reduced
by up to ten percent. The energy balance has been improved with the
option to downsize the compressed air supply or, in other words, to
reduce the power consumption of the air supply.
Moreover, the Stitchmaster ST 450 boasts an energy-efficient
drive system. Individual servo drives for each feeder enable the
system to stop immediately, thus cutting paper waste and reducing
the CO2 footprint of the particular print product. Based on a
throughput of 15 million 36-page A4 brochures, this saves around
five tons of paper a year (equivalent to 5.5 tons of CO
2).
New Streamfeeder from Heidelberg improves loading performance by
150 percent
Heidelberg has developed its own Streamfeeder for
automatically loading the horizontal feeder on the Stitchmaster ST
450 saddlestitcher. This product is earmarked for market launch at
the start of 2011. The new Streamfeeder raises productivity
significantly thanks to its intuitive operation and continuous
feeder loading by means of log technology. Both manual and log
loading are possible, which is particularly interesting for web
printers and finishers. If the Streamfeeder is used in combination
with log technology, this can improve the loading performance by
150 percent compared to the manual feeder. In the Streamfeeder,
upright sheets are separated in shingle streams and fed
horizontally into the feeder magazine. The pile height in the
magazine is controlled by an adjustable light barrier, thus
ensuring reliability during processing. The Streamfeeder is mounted
on rollers, which means it can be deployed flexibly as and when
required.
Stitchmaster ST 450 - maximum flexibility and seamless
integration
Heidelberg presented the Stitchmaster ST 450
saddlestitcher at IPEX 2006. This machine sports a high level of
automation, flexibility and productivity. A whole series of
applications are possible on this saddlestitcher as it can be
specifically adapted to a particular product, rather than the other
way round. This exceptional flexibility is due to the machine's
mobile feeders. With a capacity of up to 14,000 cycles per hour,
this saddlestitcher processes untrimmed paper formats ranging from
85 x 128 mm (3.35 x 5.04 in) to 320 x 480 mm (12.60 x 18.90 in) and
a maximum product thickness of 12 mm (0.47 in). The short makeready
time of the Stitchmaster ST 450 is ideal for frequent format
changes, short and long runs, and standard and customized print
products, and is thus geared to the target group of industrial
printers and finishing specialists. The Stitchmaster ST 450 can be
integrated seamlessly into the Prinect workflow from Heidelberg via
the JDF-compatible press control system.
