From now on, the "Siemenswall" will be known as
"Dr.-Hell-Strasse"
In honor of Dr. Rudolf Hell (99), the Kiel-based engineer,
the name of the approach road to the Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG
(Heidelberg) site is to be changed today from Siemenswall to
"Dr.-Hell-Strasse". In thus honor- ing the life and work
of Rudolf Hell, a freeman of the city, the regional capital of Kiel
is also echoing the wishes of the company. The technical achieve-
ments and contributions of the inventor, engineer and entrepreneur
Dr. Ing. Rudolf Hell ushered in a new era of media technology which
continues to this day. He is the inventor of fax technology and a
telecommunications pioneer. On December 19, 2001 he will celebrate
his 100th birthday.
At the celebration organized by the City of Kiel on the
Heidelberg site, Mayor Norbert Gansel paid tribute to Dr.
Hell's achievements: "As a brilliant inventor and
successful entrepreneur, Dr. Hell has been a stroke of luck for our
city. In this his 100th year we would like show our appreciation of
this freeman of our city by naming a street after him."
In his speech Wolfgang Pfizenmaier, Director of the
Management Board of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, stressed the
significance of the Kiel site for the Heidelberg Group:
"Rudolf Hell's inventions have influenced the entire
graphic arts industry. Heidelberg is very proud that he is a part
of the company's history. The Kiel site is rooted in the life
and work of Rudolf Hell."
The company took over the Kiel site from Linotype-Hell AG in
1996, with the aim of positioning itself as a solution provider for
the graphic arts industry by broadening its range of prepress
products. The site covers approximate- ly 230,000 square meter,
employs around 1,500 staff and plays host to four other companies.
This makes Heidelberg one of the largest employers in Kiel and the
surrounding area. As well as producing scanners and imageset- ters,
prepress software is also developed at the site. Assembly of the
new Nexpress digital color press has given the Kiel site a further
boost this year.
