The Omnipage system will be on display at the Heidelberg booth
at Ifra 2000
Introduced for the first time during drupa, the Omnipage is a
revolutionary system which automatically identifies pages at the
press console. This system is integrated with Omnicon control
consoles on Heidelberg's gapless newspaper presses and will be on
display on the Heidelberg booth number 8-651 at Ifra 2000.
The Omnipage features cameras mounted above the press console
to instantly recognize newspaper pages when they are placed on the
console. The system can then identify the corresponding page within
the press and automatically direct the control system to the
appropriate tower, web or printing couple. Small codes printed in
the lower margin of the newspaper pages signal the cameras.
"This system is highly flexible and greatly simplifies press
operation",explains Frédéric Reffet, Electronic
Technical Support Manager at Heidelberg Web Systems in Montataire.
"For example, it is not always necessary to open the newspaper
in the same way. The system is able to detect 2 consecutive pages,
2 pages coming from the same ribbon, 2 pages coming from different
sections or a single page. It also prevents simultaneous
modifications occurring on the same page."
"If the pages are not accurately positioned at the same
place on the reading table, or if they move slightly, this will not
impede system operation", he continues. "The camera scans
the codes, not the printed image. The last code detected remains on
the screen and the screen is only updated if another code is
detected".
The position of the code may be optimized according to
customer preference. Moreover, if any unwanted dots were to appear
in the code, this would not inhibit operation, as the code is
"checked" and any unwanted data would be rejected. The
codes are implanted on the printing plates so that Omnipage will
continue to operate effectively when using the turner bars. This
will also allow the web lead to be changed at any moment when a
production configuration from the prepress system is updated. With
multiple webs running, identifying pages manually at the console in
order to make registration or color corrections can be time
consuming. This system does it instantly and automatically, and
that can cut make-ready time significantly. The Omnipage will be
also available on the Tristream, a new gapless newspaper press
featuring a 2x6 configuration, announced at Ifra 2000.
