The publishers and printers of one of England's leading daily
newspapers made their presence known at drupa, by announcing intent
to place an order for Heidelberg Mainstream presses that is among
the largest in the show's history
The Telegraph Group intends to use seven Mainstream presses
with a total of 263 printing couples at two locations. Five presses
are ear-marked for West Ferry Printers, Ltd. In London. The
Trafford Park Printers, Ltd. Plant in Manchester would install two
Mainstreams.
The new presses are required to meet a growing need for
additional, high-quality color capacity. The ability of the
gapless, double-width Heidelberg press to print as many as 80,000
copies per hour in straight multi-section production also featured
in the decision.
West Ferry Printers and Trafford Park Printers are the
printers for The Daily Telegraph, which has a circulation of
approx. 1.1 million copies and The Sunday Telegraph with a
circulation of approx. 820,000 copies. West Ferry Printers
and Trafford Park Printers are two of the world's leading newspaper
printing sites, producing 38 million copies per week which includes
the Express, Guardian and Financial Times. "The Telegraph Group is
one of Europe's most prestigious newspapers operations, and this
large order is a strong endorsement for our gapless press
technology and our commitment to serving the newspaper industry as
a leading solutions provider," according to Heidelberg Web Systems
president Bob Brown. "We look forward to a long, successful
partnership."
At West Ferry Printers, one Mainstream press will run up to
ten webs. Two additional presses, each featuring ten printing
towers, will be configured with corresponding adjacent four-tower
presses, to provide variable web options. The ten-tower and
four-tower combination will be duplicated for the two presses at
Trafford Park Printers. The Mainstream press order includes a total
of 52 FD Pasters and seven JF-255 jaw folders, all supplied by
Heidelberg.
The Telegraph Group is owned by Hollinger Group, which also
has major interests in U.S. and Canadian newspapers.
