Pacesetter 870 combines productivity and versatility
Heidelberg has extended its Pacesetter line of high-volume
saddlestitchers with a model that combines advanced product
flexibility, productivity and personalization capabilities.
The new Pacesetter 870, in operation for the first time at
drupa 2000, stitches up to 15,500 books per hour in one-up or
two-up formats. It accommodates standard-lap, reverse-lap or no-lap
products ranging from A5 to A3 size and is expandable up to 40
hoppers.
The Pacesetter 870 can be seamlessly integrated with advanced
ink jet controls for personalization, and its independent hoppers
facilitate selective binding. Enhanced makeready features simplify
job changeover, and a variety of hopper, stitcher head and trimmer
options allow customization.
"Our Pacesetter saddlestitchers have made print a more
effective medium by combining industry leading productivity and
reliability with the most advanced customization
capabilities," according to Heidelberg senior vice president
Ulrik T. Nygaard. "The 870 includes new features that will
further enhance this proven technology."
The Pacesetter 870 is available with vertical or horizontal
hoppers. Both models are independently driven, allowing them to be
shifted in and out of production for high-speed selective
inserting. A two gripper main drum provides superior signature
control and reliable feeding. Single gripper transfer and opener
drums drive signatures to a raceway chain featuring adjustable
chain pin centers.
Enhanced makeready features allow the Pacesetter to excel at
short-run jobs with frequent changeovers. Vacuum timing, sucker bar
height, governor and stripper needles, and register bar adjustments
can all be made on the fly from outside the hoppers without any
tools.
The Pacesetter 870 can be equipped with advanced control
systems that can manage selective binding and ink jet printing with
single-copy control from hopper to delivery. The optional systems
allow seamless integration with downstream equipment and can manage
a wide variety of postpress printing options.
"The demand for customization is on the rise because
personalized, targeted products deliver unprecedented
results," according to Nygaard. "With the Pacesetter 870,
it is possible to ink jet a message inside or outside of the book,
parallel or perpendicular to the spine - almost anywhere a customer
wants it - with high speed and high reliability."
Heidelberg is the only bindery manufacturer that makes its
own ink jet controls, and these controls support all popular ink
jet engines.
The Pacesetter 870's SS15 reciprocating stitcher
accommodates variations in book thickness - a benefit in selective
binding. It can be equipped with an extensive selection of heads,
depending on job requirements and user preference. Trimmer options
include the HT flying trimmer, designed for high-volume
productivity, and the ST reciprocating trimmer, designed for
product versatility. Both three-knife trimmers are optimized for
selective binding, move books with the covers ideally positioned
for personalization, and trim the front edge first, allowing books
to lie flatter. Additional knives can be added to the HT or
integrated within the ST.
At drupa, the Pacesetter 870 will combine a signature printed
on the Heidelberg Sunday 2000 web press with a cover and another
signature printed on a Heidelberg Speedmaster sheetfed press. It
will also print personalized ink jet messages on the cover and on
the inside of the finished books.
"In addition to demonstrating the advanced capabilities
of the Pacesetter 870, our demonstration will also highlight the
productivity and efficiency advantages Heidelberg provides by
manufacturing press and postpress equipment that can be integrated
into complete high-volume printing solutions," Nygaard
explains.
