Brief Overview drupa 2004: More than 50 Innovations from Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG

Heidelberg world premieres unveiled at the drupa press conference on May 5, 2004:

World premiere: Speedmaster XL 105
Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) will be showcasing the Speedmaster XL 105 at drupa 2004, which will be the world premiere of a new series of printing presses for highly industrialized offset printing capable of attaining speeds of 18,000 sheets per hour. As the first press in an entirely new peak performance class, the Speedmaster XL 105 sets new standards in terms of productivity, quality and cost-effectiveness. This makes it the ideal production unit for label and packaging printers that handle long runs, a fact made possible by its high degree of automation, large print format of 74 x 105 centimeters and simple operation. Its unique system for contact-free sheet transport and innovations in the field of coating application deliver increased productivity of 30 percent and more.

World premiere: Perfecting Coating Solution
The Perfecting Coating Solution enables double-sided inline dispersion coating on the long perfecting presses in the Speedmaster SM 102 range. On a ten-color press, the fifth and tenth printing units can be used for either printing or dispersion coating. This option is also possible for twelve-color presses, where the sixth and twelfth printing units are used. This gives commercial printers with short delivery times and a vast range of jobs a clear productive advantage in inline production.

World premiere: Speedmaster CD 74-P with sheet reversing system
The Speedmaster CD 74-P with sheet reversing system enables high-quality perfecting with short changeover times between paper and board and between straight and perfecting modes. Depending on the job mix, an increase in productivity of between 15 and 25 percent over traditional midsize perfecting presses can be achieved. The target groups for the Speedmaster CD 74 sheet reversing models are commercial printers handling a wide range of printing stocks, packaging and label printers, and printshops that mainly produce greetings cards or book jackets in perfecting mode.

World premiere: Suprasetter series
The Suprasetter series is a new generation of thermal external drum imagesetters. All parts of this product have been developed by Heidelberg and it supports virtually all standard Heidelberg plate formats for sheetfed and web offset. The Suprasetter is supplied with a new developed laser system. With its thoroughly modular design, the Suprasetter offers exceptional security of investment. Users have an extensive choice of modules at their disposal to increase the level of automation and speed of the system and thereby match it to their actual requirements, while still remaining flexible for subsequent adaptations.

Summary of all Heidelberg innovations at drupa 2004:

Prinect Workflow
From now on, Heidelberg is dividing the Prinect Workflow into three application-specific solution packages: Prinect Management, Prinect Production and Prinect Color Solutions. Networking the individual solutions using the industry standard JDF plays a key role in this context. Heidelberg will also be demonstrating how, for example, digital printing can be integrated into an overall workflow using Prinect. The company is presenting a whole raft of developments and innovations in the following sectors:

Prinect in the management sector:
The new Prinect Prinance 4.4.2 version can deal with all printshop management tasks from preliminary costing and order processing to billing and post-costing. The version presented at drupa features additional functions which enhance its reliability in relation to costing and order processing. JDF functionality has been added to the printshop planning tool Prinect Data Control 6.0 (JDF) for drupa. This new interface to industry software systems will correspond to the open standard developed by CIP4.

Prinect in the preprint sector:
With a whole array of new features in the Prinect Printready System 2.0, the Prinect Meta Dimension 5.0 output system and the completely new Prinect Signa Station 1.0 software for planning, creating and managing print sheets, Heidelberg has expanded the Prinect Preprint Workflow on the basis of JDF to produce a fully integrated and open prepress workflow. The new Prinect Calibration Toolbox and Prinect Profile Toolbox products enable accurate color management setting from the original to the press. The new workflow products support a wide range of functions and complete automation and guarantee high throughput. A standardized workflow also makes it possible to combine offset and digital printing.

Prinect in the press sector:
In the press sector, Heidelberg will be exhibiting the new version of its high-end color measuring system Prinect Image Control 3.0 with an extended range of functions and improved integration into the overall workflow. The many new functions of the Prinect CP 2000 make operation and integration of the Speedmaster presses into the Prinect Workflow even more efficient. The Prinect Online Kit features additional functions and integration options for the Printmaster PM 52 and Printmaster PM 74.

Prinect in the postpress sector:
The Prinect FCS 100, presented in Version 3.0, now has an extended range of functions. The operation of job management has been further simplified. In addition to other functional expansions, the range of functions has been extended to freely definable fold types for calculating the preset values for folders.


Prepress

Prosetter series
Heidelberg will be presenting the Prosetter series with the new Multi Cassette Loader. The new module considerably enhances the productivity of the overall configuration since it enables a single device to image up to four different print formats over several hours without changing cassette.

Suprasetter series
The Suprasetter series is a new generation of thermal external drum imagesetters. All parts of this product have been developed by Heidelberg and it supports virtually all standard Heidelberg plate formats for sheetfed and web offset. The Suprasetter is supplied with a new developed laser system. With its thoroughly modular design, the Suprasetter offers exceptional security of investment. Users have an extensive choice of modules at their disposal to increase the level of automation and speed of the system and thereby match it to their actual requirements, while still remaining flexible for subsequent adaptations.


Sheetfed Offset

Printmaster PM 52 and Printmaster PM 74
A networked printshop is now reality for both presses. The Prinect Online Kit and Prinect Classic Center remote inking and register control system enable the multicolor presses to be integrated into the Prinect Workflow online (optional).
Deliveries of compact series-produced Printmaster PM 52 one- to five-color presses will begin in May 2004. Heidelberg has developed a new feeder for the Printmaster PM 74 featuring a central suction tape and a pneumatic pull lay for short make-readies and even greater productivity.

Speedmaster SM 52-8-P-H
The Speedmaster SM 52 is being presented as an eight-color press with an extended range of functions. This A3 press now also produces 4/4 jobs and jobs with up to eight colors cost-effectively in a single pass. The Speedmaster SM 52 eight-color press features a completely revised sheet transfer system. Printing stocks up to 0.6 millimeter (0.024 inch) can now also be processed.

Quickmaster DI 46-4 Pro
The Quickmaster DI 46-4 Pro features the new ProSpot imaging technology. This makes it possible to further enhance the print quality of the press. Worldwide installations of Quickmaster DI units already run into four figures, making it the market leader in its class on the short-run color market.

Speedmaster SM 74
The Speedmaster SM 74 has been fitted with a new feeder. From drupa, the press will feature an optimized sheet travel concept and a high-pile delivery on every model.

Speedmaster CD 74
The Speedmaster CD 74 with optional sheet reversing system enables high-quality perfecting printing with short changeover times between paper and board and between straight and perfecting modes. Depending on the job mix, an increase in productivity of between 15 and 25 percent over traditional perfecting presses on the midsize market can be achieved. The target groups for the Speedmaster CD 74 sheet reversing models are commercial printers handling a wide range of printing stocks, packaging and label printers, and printshops that mainly produce greetings cards or book jackets in perfecting mode. The Speedmaster CD 74 product range also includes models with a coating unit and short, space-saving delivery. There are also configurations with up to eight offset units and two coating units. The delivery of the CD 74 has been completely redesigned, being based on the delivery of the new Speedmaster 102 series.

drupa 2004 generation of the Speedmaster SM/CD 102
The new generation of the Speedmaster SM/CD 102 is being shown for the first time in public. In numerous pilot installations, this press has far exceeded customers' expectations. Many companies are even seeing added productivity significantly greater than the increase of up to 10 percent that Heidelberg predicted. Both series feature a fully revamped Preset Plus feeder and the completely redesigned Preset Plus delivery for the Speedmaster CD 102. A number of innovations relating to coating applications have already been announced. These range from flexible entry-level solutions such as the Modular Coating System to specialist solutions like the FlexoKit for processing special coatings. The innovations in the Speedmaster SM 102 include new improved cylinder jackets that enhance perfecting quality.
The new Perfecting Coating Solution enables the fifth and tenth printing units on long perfecting presses in the Speedmaster SM 102 series to be used flexibly for printing or dispersion coating. This option is also possible for 12-color presses. This gives commercial printers with short delivery times and a vast range of jobs a clear productive advantage in inline production.

Web offset

M-600 D
A fully revamped M-600 with a Multidrive system, new JDF-compatible control functions and a new JF-70 combination folder will print up to 70,000 sheets an hour at the trade show. The unit features an Ecocool dryer with chill rollers and new possibilities for fully integrated color control. Operators will be able to use automatic plate changing with the Autoplate option and a new Omni Makeready control module to demonstrate faster job changes with significantly lower paper waste.

Sunday 3000/32
Heidelberg continues to show its commitment to gapless blanket technology so that it can offer web offset printers innovative possibilities to achieve even higher productivity and cost-effectiveness. The new Sunday 3000/32 is the first web offset press in the world with a single circumferential format that offers the benefit of an eight-page wide cylinder configuration. Thanks to a web width of 1,830 millimeter (72.05 inches), 32 pages in magazine format can be printed with each revolution. This is equivalent to a speed of 100,000 copies an hour.
Heidelberg also offers needle-less former and combination folders geared to the Sunday 3000/32, including the new PCF-3 combination folder with three innovative signature handling methods.


Digital Printing

Heidelberg is presenting three new solutions for digital color printing in order to provide printshops with greater productivity and a more efficient, end-to-end workflow for a whole series of digital applications: The NexPress solution series features a number of innovations - more powerful front-ends, a fifth, optional printing unit, new software applications for Internet-driven print production and variable data printing, software expansions and improvements, and new professional consultancy services and seminars.

Postpress

Easyfold
The newly developed Easyfold folder features the latest folding solution for short A3 print runs. This machine can fold grammages of 176 gsm.

Stitchmaster ST 350
The new Stitchmaster ST 350 saddlestitcher is designed for a wide range of uses in the performance range up to 12,000 cycles per hour. The ST 350 covers paper sizes from 320 x 480 millimeters (12.6 x 18.9 inches) to 85 x 128 millimeter (3.35 x 5.04 inches) and delivers high quality and process reliability. In addition, it can be integrated into the workflow using CIP4.

Pacesetter 1100
The new high-performance Pacesetter 1100 saddlestitcher is ideal for finishing long-run magazines and books. The new Pacesetter 1100 stitches up to 20,000 copies per hour which makes it ideal for customers from the commercial and industrial print sectors. It can be used in combination with both commercial web and sheetfed offset presses. The format range supported extends from A5 to A4. The stitching capacity can be set for up to 40 feed stations. Visitors to drupa can see demonstrations of typical print jobs for each market segment.

Stahlfolder TH/KH generation of folders
The new Stahlfolder TH/KH generation of folders (TH stands for buckle plate folder) is available in widths of 56, 66 and 82 centimeters (22.05, 25.98 and 32.28 inches). The KH combination folders, which feature a cross-fold module, come in working widths of 56, 66 and 78 centimeters (22.05, 25.98 and 30.71 inches). All of these folders offer shorter makeready times thanks to numerous automation components and ensure increased efficiency due to comprehensive integration in the workflow. The modular design concept means various applications can be chosen to suit individual requirements. As with any modular system, the customer can decide exactly what he needs and retrofit individual components as required.

Diana Pro 114
Heidelberg will be exhibiting a high-performance line for processing folding cartons which consists of the Diana Pro 114 folder gluer, the Jagfeed prefeeder and the new Japack Pro case packer. The Diana Pro series is now operated directly and quickly via a touchscreen display. The graphical user interface corresponds to the standard Heidelberg intuitive navigation system.

Dymatrix 106 CSB
The new Dymatrix 106 CSB die cutter (CSB stands for Cutting, Stripping and Blanking) processes sheet formats up to 76 x 106 centimeters (29.92 x 41.73 inches). It cuts, embosses and creases paper of grammages in excess of 80 gsm, board up to 2,000 gsm and corrugated board up to 4 millimeters at processing speeds of up to 9,000 sheets an hour. It has a cutting force of 330 tons.

Eurobind series and Eurotrim
With the new Eurobind perfect binder series, Heidelberg is providing a productive and high-quality solution for perfect-bound finishing of print products in short and medium runs. The Eurobind models 200 / 300 and 500 are geared to the commercial print segment. The high-end Eurobind models 1200 and 2000 are geared to the industrial print segment and can be fitted with the automatic Eurotrim three-side cutter if required. Visitors to drupa will be able to see the Eurobind 500 and 1200 and the Eurotrim. The figures in the product names stand for the hourly cycle rates of the machines.


Forum

Heidelberg has brought together several sectors in the Heidelberg Forum between Halls 1 and 2. These include systemservice, the Print Media Academy, the Prinect Systemhaus, the Environmental Information Center (EIC), the information platform for print media deciders and the Press Center as a contact point for journalists.

systemservice
Service has long been an important element distinguishing Heidelberg from the competition. The content and variety of our services, which are available in over 170 countries, is also a vital factor in this respect. The portfolio of services on offer ranges from training courses, consumables and spare parts to Print Color Management and uninstallation.
Heidelberg is offering its customers multi-stage Remote Service based on a secure, globally standardized Internet platform. The new functions provide both a proactive and preventative service which increases press availability at the customer's significantly.

Print Media Academy (PMA)
The Print Media Academy (PMA) is to present its entire training portfolio. The key seminar topics will include application & technology, marketing and sales, and management training. Visitors will have numerous opportunities to find out more about industry-specific training and worldwide PMA sites will also be presenting their service portfolio. A reunion for former students of the Summer University and Winter University management programs is also planned.

Prinect Systemhaus
The Prinect Systemhaus is a spin-off from a division of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG and operates exclusively in Germany. The company specializes in optimizing print media production and offers services such as consulting, business process analysis, implementing management systems and networking them with production systems via JDF. Increasingly, networking includes Internet-based solutions to support the interaction between print buyers and print service providers.

Environmental Information Center
In the "Environmental Information Center", Heidelberg will be showing that environmental protection and cost-effectiveness go hand in hand. The focus here will be on the peripherals of the Star series. For the first time, visitors will be able to see demonstrations of Remote Service for peripherals via CANopen. There are also a number of innovations relating to traditional environmental issues such as powder reduction and alcohol-free printing.

Print media deciders
In the Forum, print media deciders will be able to find out more about promising new applications from the direct mail sector and new coating and surface finishing options which enable the production of more attractive printed matter. From here, interested parties can take part in a tour of the Heidelberg booth which will enable them to experience creative applications at first hand.


UV Technology Center

In the UV Technology Center in Hall 3, Heidelberg will present the highlights of UV printing in conjunction with its partner IST Metz GmbH. The main focus of the presentation will be the use of UV. Print jobs with higher quality than has ever been seen before at a trade show demonstrate the possibilities offered by inline surface finishing.
