Shop Around the Clock

More and more customers are ordering their consumables and spare parts from the Heidelberg Online Shop. Why? Because it's comfortable and the quality of the products and service are just right. Our editor tried it out.

Let's assume I live in Canada and want to order consumables. All I have to do is register and log into the Heidelberg Online Shop. I open up www.shop.heidelberg.com, select Canada and then enter my user name and password on the login screen. That's it and I'm in! Aha, the banner shows there's a deal on powder today. But first I have to go through my shopping list: printing plates, ink and dispersion coating.

How does it work?
I click on "prepress" on the side navigation bar, then on the subcategory "printing plates". I decide on untreated plates from Saphira in A3 format. Next I need ink. That's located under "press". Click once on "Saphira yellow" and four buckets are already in my virtual shopping cart. I add a bucket of dispersion coating. And since I'm already shopping, I throw in the appropriate washing agent for the blankets at the same time. Quickly I click on the powder that's on sale, and it's off to the cash register. "The Online Shop automatically calculates the relevant discounts as it reaches the final price," explains Torsten Büscher, Vice President of eMarketing at Heidelberg. Together with Claus-Jürgen Kromm, Technical Director of the Heidelberg Online Shop, he is responsible for the construction of the new sales channel.
What's available?
I can save my order as a list with my own designated name, for example "weekly order". "The shopping list is a popular feature. Many customers maintain multiple lists - for prepress, press and postpress or organize them according to time, such as weekly or monthly needs," says Kromm. That saves time because the list only has to be placed in the shopping cart. And if you don't want to order exactly the same things again, all you have to do is modify the list. The Online Shop generates shopping tips ("related products") - a maximum of five so that it doesn't become confusing - which match the ordered products. This service is very well-received by customers, says Büscher, since customers sometimes forget something or only buy materials that they'll need soon.

What advantages does the Online Shop offer?
A glance at the clock shows that it's just past eleven when I send off my order. Special requests for delivery can be made in the comments field. For example, I can request that the goods shouldn't be delivered until the afternoon or that they should be brought around to the print shop's back door. The Heidelberg Online Shop is simply an additional way to order, alongside fax and telephone. However, it offers unique advantages: customers can order from anywhere in the world and at any time. The only requirement is Internet access. Simultaneously, they profit from high transparency and less administrative work. Online shoppers can look at their purchase history to check costs or ensure, for example, that their employees only order the pre-defined products.

Online shopping is currently available in 12 countries and that number is constantly growing. "We want to make shopping as easy as possible," says Büscher. The team certainly succeeded in doing so. I, for one, will certainly log in again soon to "shop around the clock".
