With AutoPlate XL, the plates on the Speedmaster XL 75 can be
changed in no more than 90 seconds-fully automatically and
simultaneously. That helps printshops meet tight production
schedules and makes small print runs far more lucrative.
Why rush if things can be done automatically? AutoPlate XL
takes only 90 seconds to change plates, no matter whether five,
eight, or even twelve plates on the Speedmaster XL 75 need to be
changed. "Since print runs are becoming smaller and smaller,
make-ready times have to be minimized in order to produce
efficiently. AutoPlate XL is the next module on the way to fully
automating and speeding up the make-ready process", explains Frank
Süsser, Senior Product Manager. AutoPlate XL increases the
utilization ratio of the press, because changing plates does not
take longer than processing small print runs.
Fast and easy plate changes
Thanks to its high degree of automation, the Speedmaster
XL 75 is often operated by a single printer: with the help of
Intellistart at the high-performance Prinect Press Center, he sets
parameters such as the paper format, substrate thickness, and
color, or he controls the register and the ink supply inline using
Prinect Inpress Control. Only the plates had to be changed manually
up to now. With small print runs that require many job changes,
these interruptions consumed precious time: an average of one
minute per plate. "With five plates, that adds up to roughly five
minutes. I could complete a job of around 1,000 copies in that
time", emphasizes Süsser.
Perfect register accuracy
Thanks to AutoPlate XL, the operator only has to put new
plates in readiness at the printing unit. Everything else is done
automatically: the old plates are ejected, and all the new plates
are drawn into the printing units simultaneously. AutoPlate XL is
equipped with sensors to make sure that the plates are perfectly
aligned to the register. The sensors not only detect plates that
are not in perfect contact with the register pins, they also ensure
the correction: AutoPlate XL aligns the plate perfectly by slight
vibration.
Frequent job changes make it all the more worthwhile
AutoPlate XL is already worthwhile for rather short
presses with four or five printing units that continuously produce
small print runs, because more jobs can be completed per day. But
the longer the press, the greater the advantage. With a ten-color
press, the automatic plate changing process can save roughly eight
minutes compared to a manual plate change. "Our customers can now
plan and execute their jobs more reliably. They do not only benefit
by saving time, but also from more production continuity and
reliability, because they know for sure that plates can be changed
within 90 seconds", explains Süsser. With ten plate changes
per shift, AutoPlate XL already pays off after about two years with
a Speedmaster XL 75-5. With longer presses, the pay-back period is
even shorter. AutoPlate XL is available for all Speedmaster XL 75
presses and will also be offered for UV presses in this format as
of IPEX 2010.
Why to invest in AutoPlate XL:
- 90 seconds for a complete plate change, independent of the
number of printing units
- Up to eight minutes less needed per job change
- Higher utilization ratio of the press
- More planning reliability and faster job completion
